It is almost our group of regular kakis again, with a couple of new faces. Most of us met up at Punggol kopitiam at 7am for an un-sumptuous breakfast, inspite of the heavy rain and left on the wet morning at almost 10 am. onboard Seven Seas Conqueress.
The ICA were unusually busy with at least 4 tugs with barges and afew other pleasure crafts waiting for the clearance. Finally, we were cleared in slightly shorter than expected time, and headed out to Horsburg in calm water and brighter & dryer skies.
We had a pretty good start with wrasse, and there was this take that folded the rod over. With much difficulty it was pulled out from the holder and followed in the next moment, with a silent “piak!”, the rod tip of a customized rod dived straight down towards the culprit!!!
What?!?! How?!?! No one knows exactly, could have been a defect or damage to the graphite rod. Battle continued with the unintentional modified ‘short stroker’, and finally it came up, the biggest Wrasse of about 3kg (just an estimate) for this trip!
Definitely an envy for many of us….
The day continued with sporadic lokh-jiak, lokh-jiak @ mid boat, with good table sized blue stripped groupers, wrasse and afew ‘Michael Jackson’, which was subsequently released, but somehow one or two unknowly landed in the ice box. 2 Murtabaks and a black Kachi were also added into the ‘Jolly’ box (ice chest).
3 FAT Batfishes and a black Sweetlip was landed as well, and one of it C&R by our organizer Andrew, to fight another day.
Our deckie with one of the Batfish after unhooking.
At dusk, it was interesting at the rear this time, again with sporadic lokh-jiak, lokh-jiak of Sweetlip and then, the snappers! And bite activities went well until about 12pm where it was starting to drag.
Squids are not too plentiful and really precious, as they say, ‘Got bait no fish, got fish not enough baits!’
Ah Chang zhang fish!
Only a couple of fish were taken in the 2nd part of the night, including 1 unstoppable. The small hook opened up, after a long run to the rear and then started heading up again… with almost half the spool down. Suspected to be a huge Cobia….. and it should still be there!
We hoped for the dawn attack now, with most of us taking a couple of hours nap, of course with SCC 5 star bed, some took…….. longer… before dawn we headed back towards the Anchorage.
Dawn came, but not what we had hoped for, thought we had a good start and should not end this way? No, nothing happened, what ever thrown in, changed locations, etc..etc.. other than the ‘guppies’ nibbling off all the bait, nothing…..!
Finally, we called it a day with these. With the biggest, 2 Murtabaks, Black Kachi and the Wrasse.
Thanks again to the wonderful group of fun Kakis, organiser Andrew, Skipper and deckies of SSC.
